Acquisition Announcement: Shakesbear, a new series of picture books written by Louie Stowell

We are delighted to be working with author Louie Stowell and illustrator Isobel Lundie on this exciting new picture book series, Shakesbear, publishing in 2024.

Louie has gamely taken on the task of reimagining the Bard as a slightly bumbling but lovable bear, and placing him and his friends in a woodland setting revolving around the Glade Theatre – pure genius! Each 32-page picture book is based very loosely on a different Shakespeare play with themes that children will easily relate to, including tears before bedtime (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, what else?) and temper tantrums (The Tempest, of course!). We think young children will love getting to know the colourful cast of characters and finding out that all the world is, indeed, a stage.

Patricia Hegarty, Editorial Director said:

“Louie has a fantastic track record in writing for children, and she has once again woven her magic in bringing Shakesbear and his fellow thespians to life with her trademark wit and humour. We knew that we needed a very special illustrator to do justice to Louie’s cast of characters and Isobel fits the bill perfectly. We have worked with her previously on Super Poopers, so we knew she would wow us with her amazingly rich and colourful illustrations. So, now we have the perfect author and illustrator in place, the stage is set…”

About joining the Little Tiger list, Stowell has said:

“I’ve wanted to work with Little Tiger for ages, and these books are an utter joy to write. After working in preschool publishing, it’s been wonderful to be on the other side of the editorial table, too.  And to anyone who thinks English degrees are useless, I say that term spent on Shakespeare is finally proving professionally useful, 20 years on… although sadly all scholars have neglected to pursue the notion that Shakespeare was, in fact, a large, toddler-like bear. Writing books for children to enjoy and relate to that also offer little nods to the adults reading them out loud is one of my favourite things, and working with such a talented artist to bring Shakesbear’s world to life is a dream!”

Lundie also commented:

‘I’m having the best time experimenting with how I can transform a tranquil woodland into chaotic Elizabethan London… and so is my spaniel Roo who runs around madly while I’m drawing the local woodland for reference. I’m really looking forward to this partnership. What a magical project!’

The deal for World: All Language rights for this series was struck with Molly Ker Hawn of the Bent Agency. Isobel Lundie is represented by the Plum Agency.

Little Tiger will publish the first two instalments in the Shakesbear series in Spring 2024.

Acquisition Announcement: Yomi and the Fury of Ninki Nanka

LITTLE TIGER SIGNS YOUNG FICTION SERIES INSPIRED BY BEASTS OF AFRICAN MYTHOLOGY

Senior Editor Mattie Whitehead has acquired The Nkara Chronicles, an action-packed new fantasy series by debut author Davina Tijani. The deal for World all language rights in four books was struck with Davinia Andrew-Lynch at Andlyn. Andrew-Lynch also represents Adam Douglas-Bagley, who has signed on to illustrate the series. Whitehead will edit alongside Little Tiger Editorial Assistant Karelle Tobias.

A fun, fresh and fast-paced series based on African mythology for readers aged 6 to 9, The Nkara Chronicles, which begins with Yomi and the Fury of Ninki Nanka, is an adventure full of heart and humour wrapped up in a fun accessible fantasy. It’s Pokémon meets Beast Quest across Africa!

Yomi and her younger brother Kayode are supposed to be on the trip of a lifetime visiting The Gambia with their Uncle Olu. Instead, their uncle’s work has made this the most boring holiday ever! But when Yomi witnesses the Dragon King, Ninki Nanka, being kidnapped from the sky, things get a lot more exciting. Determined to rescue him, Yomi and Kayode uncover secrets and meet many magnificent beasts – but will it be enough to save Ninki Nanka?

Whitehead said: “The strength of Davina’s plotting and her characterisation is brilliant – the series is so fantastically visual and we love the celebration of African mythology. How lucky are readers to meet these wonderful beasts! The humour, adventure and heart throughout had us totally gripped, and we can’t wait for readers to meet Yomi and Kayode, and see their quests come to life through Adam’s incredible illustrations.”

Tijani said: “Mythology has always been a love of mine since I was a kid. African Mythology is wondrous in its richness, its scope and its powerful storytelling, which passes down through the generations who marvel at the fantastical beasts, compelling characters and thrilling stories – this series is a love letter to all of this and so much more. Working with the amazing Little Tiger team to bring these magical and adventurous stories to life has been a dream come true. I hope readers will treasure and love Yomi, Kayode and the rest of the characters as much I do and get lost in the enchanting world of Nkara which has been superbly brought to life and illustrated by Adam.”

Douglas-Bagley said: It has been wonderful to work on Yomi! I couldn’t have asked for a better world to illustrate. From the mythical creatures to the mysterious organisations the books are rich with magical detail. I can’t wait for readers to see what fantastical adventures Yomi and Kayode go on next.

Little Tiger will publish Yomi and the Fury of Ninki Nanka in Summer 2023 with book two following in Autumn 2023 and three and four in 2024.
