🎭 A Midsummer Night’s Drama Takeover 🎭

Hi it’s Isobel (@isobel_lundie_illustration), I thought I’d share some of the early sketches and development from A Midsummer Night's Drama by @louiestowell. It’s been really nice for me to look back to see how my scrawling sketches transform into finished artwork.

For this project, the characters are larger than life and needed witty little quirks and oddities to give them the charm I imagined when reading Louie’s manuscript. I spent a fair amount of time looking at Elizabethan clothing and interiors before making a stab at the roughs. The Queen Bee for instance is supposed to be Queen Elizabeth the 1st so I spent some time transforming her traditional gown into a bee suit, fully equipped with a ruffle and strings of pearls.

I hope you can see by flicking through these images how rough my layouts start out as. I like working quickly so I can get all my ideas out of my brain before they disappear, and it also makes me less precious to changes from wise designers like Emma. Once thumbnails are approved or discussed I work into them to create something with a lot more detail before finally making the final artwork by drawing in pencils and scanning it in.
