Have you ever wondered why we talk about ‘buttering someone up’ or where the phrase ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’ actually comes from? What does it mean to ‘comb the giraffe’ in France or to ‘wear a cat on your head’ in Japan? This beautifully illustrated collection of curious phrases from around the world is a voyage of cultural discovery and a treasure trove of fascinating facts.

This book surpassed my expectations. I think I was expecting something resembling an encyclopedia, with many more idioms per page, suited mainly to young people with a particular interest in words and/or the English language. Instead, I opened up the book to discover a collection of idioms from around the world – one per double-page spread – accompanied by bright, colourful illustrations and presented in an exciting way that will appeal to children (and adults) from all backgrounds and walks of life. In addition to explaining what each idiom means and where it comes from, Nicola Edwards has included a multitude of fun and interesting facts which take the reader on a little voyage around the world to explore different cultures and languages.

I can’t wait to share this book with my children. My plan is for us to work through it by randomly selecting a page each night at bedtime and seeing where the journey takes us.

Thank you Little Tiger Press for the opportunity to explore this book.
